Abstract: We discuss a reformulation of the Higgs theory where the mass of the scalar mode only appears in the quadratic part of the action and not in the interaction vertices, unlike in the Standard Model. Renormalization of the theory is studied. A natural non power-counting renormalizable extension of this model is then presented, physically equivalent to the inclusion of the dimension six effective operator \partial_\mu (\Phi^\dagger \Phi) \partial^\mu (\Phi^\dagger \Phi). The new UV divergences are arranged in a perturbation series around the power-counting renormalizable theory and characterized in terms of a functional symmetry of the theory. This is consistent with recent results on the one-loop anomalous dimensions of dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory.
